Commercial Fish Pond Benefits

1. Stable supply and Demand

Fish is one of the highest sources of protein, and is consumed on a very large scale. This means that demand for fish is stable throughout the year and since fishes grow rapidly, there will always be enough to supply

2. Top consumer choice

Fish is usually much cheaper than most meat products and as a result, it sells much faster. This makes it very appealing to consumers making it the top choice for consumers in terms of affordability.

3. Steady Growth pattern

The growth pattern in fish is very fast and easy to understand. Farmers can also quicken the growth process of the fishes by giving them certain growth-enhancing feeds. Farmers can organize their fish pond around the fishes’ growth pattern so that they can harvest and sell all year round.

4. High Revenue

With proper planning and good management, fish farming can be very profitable for farmers.

5. No Environmental Hazard

Commercial fish ponds can be set up anywhere, even in residential areas, because it does not pose any risk to the environment.

6. Easy Addition to General farm activities

Farmers can easily adopt fish farming into their already existing crop farms and create more profit while conserving water and other resources.

7. Any species of fish can be reared

You are free to grow any species of fish you choose to!

8. Ease of Access

The fish ponds can be placed or even constructed within your compound to increase accessibility and cut off of transportation costs.

9. Easy to maintain

With adequate knowledge, expertise, and resources, fishes can be very easy to handle and maintain.

How We Construct Commercial Fish Ponds

The assurance of a regular and good source of water supply and land that can retain water (in the case of earthen ponds) for fish culture is the impetus that farmers need in planning how large the pond should be and how many of a particular unit or units should be constructed. Having done the survey of the land, it is easy to plan the layout of the ponds and channels on paper.

Ongoing Commercial Pond Maintenance

An ideal water condition is necessary for the survival and growth of healthy fish. This is because the entire life of the fish is completely dependent on the quality of its environment. The pond bottom has an important role to play on the water quality of the medium because the fertility of the pond is directly related to the size of fish at harvest. It is for this that fishponds must be limed and fertilized prior to stocking with fish fingerlings or juveniles.

Pond Liner: Your Complete Liner Repair Guide

Complete Pond Liner Repair Guide

Pond liners are a must have for all fish pond owners. They are a plastic liner that ensures that  the water in your pond prevents leaks, and you can maintain a healthy atmosphere. From a technical stand point, a pond liner is an impermeable geomembrane used to retain liquids. Sometimes however you may need to repair this useful tool. This guide will help you, but you can call us 24/7 for liner repairs or ongoing outdoor pond maintenance in Oklahoma. Pond liners are used for things like the:

pond liner

Common Ways That Pond Liners Tear

Ponds will always lose some water due to uncontrollable factors like evaporation, splashing from water features and waterfalls. But if the water starts disappearing rapidly or at a faster rate than it normally does then you will need to fix the issue or reach out to a team of professionals like Oklahoma Ponds for guidance. When you notice this happening, you have to figure out whether or not you have a leak. Below are some common ways that pond liners tear:

UV Light:

Quality pond liners usually have a warranty against damage from UV light and should at least last up to twenty years. However, there are cases when the pond liner in question is thin and low quality. In these cases the pond liner can be damaged by UV light.

External Sources:

External sources are the main source of damage to the liner. These are things like, people walking inside the pond, sharp objects puncturing the liner, or roots growing up through the base of the pond. You can prevent roots from damaging your liner by laying pond underlay on the ground before laying the liner down. People often lay weed mat first, beneath the underlay which is a cheap way to get another protective layer before the liner. Weed mats help to guide roots away from the liner.

How to Repair a Pond Liner

Once you suspect that you might have a tear in your liner, follow these steps to find it.

  1. Turn off your pond pump and monitor the water level for roughly 24-48 hours. If the water level continues to drop, then the leak is located in the main basin of the pond and not outside of the pond in a water feature or piping.
Commercial pond construction
  1. If the tear is located outside the pond, then you should check your plumbing joins and pipes for leaks. You should also check the waterfall and stream. In such a case the leak is usually a result of plant latter or other obstructions that raise the water level above the liner, or stones settling and moving the liner. Check for wet spots outside the pond in these areas.

3. If the leak turns out to be in the main basin, let the pond empty to the point where the level of the pond stays steady. This will help you figure out the approximate level of the leak. In the case where the water level gets low enough to harm the fish and plants, then the fish and plants should be removed and placed in a free standing pond temporarily.

Repairing the Pond Liner

There are numerous methods for repairing a pond liner. The method you choose depends on your budget and time frame.

For a quick and affordable fix, you can use a sealant to fix the hole underwater, a sealant that is safe for fish and plants. For more difficult or larger tears, please contact us for assistance.

  1. Place the silicon in a caulking gun, and squeeze it into and around the hole in the pond liner.
  2. Smear the silicon over and around the hole.
  3. For a larger hole, cut a small piece of the pond liner from the edge of the pond and place that over the silicon to patch the hole. Ensure both pond liner surfaces are cleaned well first. The pond can be re-filled when you are satisfied with your repair work.

How to Prevent Pond Liners from Tearing

The key to preventing your pond liner from tearing is to make sure you buy the right pond liner and to install it right. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid when buying and installing your liner:

  • Putting too much emphasis on price: Pond lines tend to last for a really long time. As long as you choose one that is tough enough to resist puncturing and damage by exposure to sunlight and that is strong enough to line a pond for many years. It isn’t a bad idea for you to spend a decent amount of money for a product that lasts for minimum 20 years. The best choice for a garden pond would be a 0.75mm thick EPDM (Epalyn) liner.
  • Ordering the wrong size pond liner: Measure the hole for the pond accurately in three directions – the length, breadth and depth. Then go online to put these figures into a pond liner size calculator to get the exact dimensions.
  • Not adding a protective underlay to your order: Your pond liner needs to be protected from above and below. Without protecting your pond, you’ll be exposing it to possible damage. So, you have to line your pond with a geotextile protective underlay before installing it.
  • Failure to secure the edges of the liner: When you install the liner, make sure to adequately overlap the edges to make sure your feature is water tight. Then secure the overlap in place with your choice of edging material.

Types of Koi Fish: A ‘School’ of Variety

Types of Koi Fish Varieties

The Japanese Koi are arguably the most popular and widely kept fish on the globe. Koi fish are also known as Nishikigoi or jinli, which translates to ‘brocaded carp.’ They are very colorful fish which is why they can usually be seen in aquariums and the koi ponds we install for our customers.

The Japanese have identified numerous varieties of koi fish. These distinguish the varieties of koi fish based on their coloration, scales, and patterns. Koi fish are commonly found in white, red, black, blue, yellow, and cream colors.

Over 100 types of koi fish have been identified but only about 13 are popular all over the world. The most popular types of koi fish are:

Kohaku is the first variety of koi fish that developed with two colors. This fish’s majestic beauty makes it the most popular choice for koi pond. The Kohaku koi fish has a white colored body witch beautiful red blotches that give it its gorgeous look and recognizable aesthetic. Also, Kohaku fish usually have a yellow nose.

Kohaku have markings on their bodies that make them stand out. Most Kohaku have a red-colored mark on their head that is very distinguishable from the markings on the rest of their body.

Taisho Sanke is also known as the Taisho Sanshoku or simply Sanke. Sanshoku means three colors. The Taisho has three colors on its body which are white, red, and black. It looks just like the Kohaku koi, except it has black markings.

Showa is also known as Showa Sanshoku or Showa Sanke. As mentioned earlier, sanshoku means three colors. Showa gets its name due to the presence of white, red, and black colors on its body.

Showa is quite similar to Sanke. However, the main difference that sets the two types of koi fish apart is the Karasu (black-colored body) of the Showa. Showa has white and red-colored markings over a mostly black-colored body or base.

The Tancho koi fish is named after the national bird of Japan, the Tancho Crane, which has a prominent red spot on its head. Tancho is simple and sleek and is known for the trademark pigmentation (a red spot) on its head.

Tancho Kohaku is the most unusually beautiful Tancho. It is snow-white in color and has a red-colored spot on its head. This spot is usually round in shape, but it can be found in other symmetrical shapes as well. To fall under the Tancho umbrella, the spot on the head should be symmetrical, regardless of its shape.

Utsuri is not just a single type of koi fish. It is the name of a category, Utsurimono, that includes three types of Utsuri koi fish; Shiro Utsuri, Ki Utsuri, and Hi Utsuri. The koi fish that fall under in the Utsuri category have a black-colored body with red, white, or yellow markings.

How to Take Care of Koi Fish

There is no end to the benefits of having a Koi fish pond at your home. The aesthetically pleasing koi have a calming and anxiety relieving effect on people and few things come as close to paradise as a koi pond.

But like all beautiful things in life, koi fish, it takes a little knowledge to care for koi fish and to keep them healthy and beautiful. The key to taking care of koi fish is the pond. A healthy koi pond means healthy koi fish.

Listed below are the most important keys for caring for koi fish.

Perform constant water checks to avoid common problems

Koi pond owners will likely deal with issues like acid rain, excessive fish waste and nutrient-enriched runoff. You have to perform regular water checks to keep these issues from turning into serious problems for your koi.

Maintain the right temperature

Although it’s uncommon in Oklahoma, when ice does form on the pond’s surface, the koi fish will quietly go to the bottom of the pond. If the forecast expects freezing temperatures for several days then you will want to use a floating de-icer to maintain the hole in the ice for proper gas exchange.

Avoid overfeeding

Over feeding your Koi is one of the most common yet unhealthiest mistakes made by well-intentioned koi owners. Overfeeding can lead to poor water quality which itself can initiate a host of  additional problems down the road.  These problems include high ammonia and nitrites in the water which can translate into fin rot, parasites and other diseases.

Some breeders will pay up to $20,000 for a highly prized adult koi. Younger koi around four inches can sell for $10 or less for for the hobbyist koi owner.

But pricing varies everywhere. Where you purchase your koi fish, the variety of koi fish, the size of the fish, and the lineage can all affect pricing.

This simple system requires very little maintenance, can be installed in as little as one day, and ideal for homes with infants or domesticated animals that just can’t resist the urge to have fun in the water. Pondless Waterfall Installation

Now that you’ve taken out hours or possibly days from your busy schedule to create the perfect pondless waterfall, it is only natural that you take out time to maintain it such that it’ll have a proper lifespan. You can do this in a variety of ways such as:

  • Cleaning up Algae

Largely harmless in the grand scheme of things but super ugly thanks to the way it gathers up in the most vintage of spots. Algae has the unique yet notorious talent of making facilities look unkempt and unattractive. They form based on having a steady supply of moisture, sunlight and organic material. Hence, the best way to combat it is to cut off the algae’s supply route. This can be done by regularly cleaning and removing the algae from your treasured rocks.

  • Tidying the Debris

Debris isn’t a new thing when talking about aquatic components, as such it’s not such a bad thing. Pondless waterfalls typically contain various sizes of rocks, which form crevices that trap debris, such as leaves and twigs. To aid your waterfall’s beauty ensure you make out time to rid the surroundings of the debris and cut off the supply route as soon as possible. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

  • Curb the Evaporation

The scariest part of having this facility is the possible evaporation of your hard work. While pondless waterfalls use significantly less water than a waterfall installed in a pond, due to the constant recycling of water, this water will eventually evaporate and you will need to refill the reservoir. Ensure that you have proper connections and a fantastic reservoir to regularly tend to your waterfall. I mean, what’s the beauty of such a facility without the water?

Costs of a Pondless Waterfall Installation

As it is with almost every  project worth undertaking, pricing a pondless waterfall isn’t exactly a piece of cake. You have to consider a plethora of factors such as material cost, site access and other unforeseen circumstances too. The combination of all of this might shoot up your budget or take it significantly down. All things considered, we are positive that our pricing at Oklahoma Ponds will pleasantly surprise you. We offer fair pricing and with over 30 years of experience, you can trust in us to build you a beautiful fountain that will last the test of time
