Outdoor Water Fountains: How to Keep The Water Clean

How to Keep Your Outdoor Fountain Water Clean

What’s the use of getting an outdoor water fountain if you can’t keep it clean, proper and tidy? There are many ways to clean your fountain, however we’ll be highlighting a few of the best. At Oklahoma Ponds, we can do this for you at an affordable rate and make sure your fountain water is at its cleanest.

Let’s take you through the unique ways of maintaining the sanctity of your outdoor water fountain.

Why Does Outdoor Fountain Water Get Dirty?

Before we go into the nitty-gritty of how to keep outdoor water fountains clean, it’s necessary to show just how they get dirty in the first place. Here are a few of the many things that make a clear water fountain dirty.

  • Birds

As much as birds add scenery and a touch of nature to your fountain, they can also be quite pesky and largely disruptive if due care isn’t taken. Additionally, birds have the bad habits of dropping their fecal all over your adored fountain. Some also find ways of finding and disposing dirty leaves into the pool of clean water. If you love the scenery that birds give your fountain, you should also love the extra maintenance you’re bound to observe.

  • Location

It’s not every day that a homeowner lives in a gated community or a place where pesky neighbors or other animals don’t trespass on a regular basis. That’s why choosing the right location is a critical factor when choosing the placement of your water fountain. If the fountain is placed in the backyard and children are present, those wonderful kids could damage or ruin the fountain if proper maintenance is not maintained at all times.

  • Poor Layout

Outdoor water fountains are typically a well-thought-out addition to an established residency. That’s why it’s important pay close detail to the layout of the pond. One of the biggest issues maintaining the cleanliness of a fountain is being prone to dirt which can lead to clogging the pipes or causing erosion over time. Oklahoma Ponds has you covered, whether you plan to renovate or if you’re looking for consistent maintenance.

How Can I Properly Maintain My Outdoor Fountain/Pond and Waterfall?

Once you get the construction or renovation taken care of, the next thing to do is start the maintenance. That means that it’s a whole different ball game. While there are tons of ways to do this, we can show you a few that’ll be of immense use in your pond maintenance schedule.

  • Clean your pond regularly.

The most important step in maintaining your pond, and preserving it for a long time is to clean it regularly. No matter how isolated or well-constructed a pond is, it needs constant cleaning. If you can’t do this, then there’s no point in having the facility in the first place. But that’s why you got us at Oklahoma Ponds, we’re the best in the business and consistency is our biggest mantra. As long as you can clean the pond regularly, you’ll be sure that it will maintain its shine, aura, and prestige, no matter how long you’ve had it!

  • Control algae growth.

While algae are not necessarily a bad thing, neither is it harmful to the species in the pond, it could be very ugly if not nipped in the bud. It would be such a shame if the pristine pond that you spent a significant amount of money and time, gets taken over by algae. That’s why you need to control the algae growth and make sure that it does not get out of control, you can contact Oklahoma Ponds for this. We’ve got the best remedy to keep your pond fresh and tidy.

  • Troubleshoot and repair any leaks.

A major flaw that we’ve noticed in a lot of pond owners, has to be their seemingly lax nature after they’ve gotten the pond constructed and working for a few months. They suddenly stop cleaning, they stop monitoring the territory, and worst of all they avoid checking out the facility for potential leaks. All of the mentioned could be very detrimental to the pond and none is more harmful than the leaking aspect. You have to ensure that the pond is frequently troubleshot to avoid a disastrous leak and permanent damage to the facility. Do this, and your pond is safe for the long haul. Do the other, and well, just expect the other not so good side of the coin.

Professional Pond Maintenance vs DIY

Homeowners often ask us what makes the most sense for them: Having a professional to maintain your pond or getting equipped to do it by yourself? Even though we are a well-staffed and highly recommended pond maintenance company, we will give you an honest answer and proper reasons to back it up. Firstly, we will give you the merits of hiring a professional and then the merits of doing it yourself.

Merits of hiring a professional (such as Oklahoma Ponds)

  • Finished In a Matter of Days

When you contract Oklahoma Ponds, rest assured that all the maintenance work will be done in record time and before you know it, your fountain will be as good as new. There will be no stress, no fuss, and certainly no horror stories. You don’t have to take our word for it, just check out the online reviews we’ve gotten from customers.

  • Stress and Labor Free

Take our word for it, maintaining a pond is no easy task. You will carry out hard labor and this will be overburdening if you don’t have a proper backup. However, a professional service company like ours has all the labor that is needed for the job. Why do you want to stress yourself when we can get the job done for you?

  • We Have Seen It All

Like we said before, as long as it’s about fountains and ponds, Oklahoma Ponds has you covered. There’s nothing in pond or fountain maintenance that we haven’t seen in our many years of service. That’s why, instead of consulting Wikipedia and YouTube every five minutes, you can give the pros to get the job done. It’s safer and honestly, you can spend your time doing something way more fun and fulfilling.

Merits of Doing It Yourself

  • Save Money

Everything these days is already on the internet so what’s the point of spending your money and hiring so-called professionals. Honestly, it’s fine, and we will understand if that’s the path you choose to follow. Saving money is important to every homeowner as well as saving time. If you’re a homeowner who loves to learn how to do it themselves, then be prepared to forego a labor intensive and time-consuming project.

  • A sense of accomplishment

There’s nothing more fulfilling for someone knowing that they’ve accomplished a labor intensive and time-consuming project. It’s certainly an accomplishment to look at your outdoor pond or fountain and you know that you not only built it from scratch, but you’re also responsible for its maintenance without any outside help.

Brace the Cold: 5 Winter Pond Maintenance Tips

The Importance of Winter Pond Maintenance

Ponds serve an array of functions for pond owners. They are the habitat for treasured fishes, they are a status symbol and more often than not they beauty a residential apartment. As such it would be a major shame to see such an important facility frozen over no thanks to an adverse season.

Winter comes with its unique problems, as such pond owners must be smart enough to follow some procedures to ensure they aren’t on the wrong side of the divide. Maintaining your pond during the wintertime is very important and in the course of this discussion, we’ll be showing you just how to do it.

How to prevent your pond from freezing over

There are a few ways you can prevent your pond from becoming an unwanted iceberg. They include:

  • Make your pond deeper

The deeper your pond, the harder the chance of it freezing. It’s worthy of note that ponds which are more than 36 inches deep are easier to stop from freezing absolutely. The ideal depth of your pond should be 48 inches deep or thereabouts. If you built your pond to a particular cap, there’s no reason why you can’t contact a pond man to do the needful. This will be very helpful to your fish, pond, and also your resources before and after winter.

  • Cover your garden pond

Winter tends to be super unforgiving and does not forget that ignorance is not an excuse. Don’t wait till your treasured pond is all frozen up before you react. The smartest way to handle a potential freezing catastrophe is to move swiftly into action. Cover your pond with a suitable material such as a section of netting, tarpaulin, or bubble wrap, well-stretched over a frame. The material you use for your pond depends on the said pond, take out time, make some research, and do what’s best for your pond and its inhabitants.

  • Invest in a Pond Heater

There are as many types of pond heaters in the market as there are fishes in your pond. Okay, I might be slightly exaggerating there, but you know the drill. There are different sizes and strengths of pond heaters so it’s only right that you pick what’s best for your type of pond. They all have their unique uses. The smaller ones are nice for keeping a small area defrosted, the slightly bigger ones are adequate for filtering the pond and heating all the water while whole pond water heaters are great for mass effect and an all-round job.

Do you need to keep your pump running in the Winter?

Keeping your pump running in the winter is dependent on a couple of factors and a bunch of conditions. The main factor however is if and whether the place you’re living in is adversely affected by the winter season. This would therefore lead to a few questions which need answering.

  • What are the Benefits of having your Pump running in Winter?

Once your pond water isn’t sitting still, there’ll be a next to zero chance of it freezing, that’s what the pump does. Also, this is extremely essential if you have aquatic animals in your pond. A frozen pond would mean sure extinction so it’s super important that the pump runs all winter to help keep the water warm enough for them.

  • What are the Benefits of having your Pump running in Winter?

The only real way you can benefit from not having a pump during wintertime is if there is no aquatic animal present in the pond. As long as there’s none, monitoring the pond to avoid it freezing shouldn’t be that big of a deal. All you got to do is Keep an eye on weather reports to know when to turn off the pump. Simple right?

  • The Nutshell

Honestly, it seems more work to not have a pump running than have one that’s running. You’ll be perpetually monitoring temperature (such a chore), there are so many pesky conditions (why won’t I have aquatic life), and the fact that winter is one of the laziest seasons ever. You should have a steady running pond pump as this will allay your fears and keep your aquatic buddies comfortable, productive, and super happy.

How to Build a Koi Pond

How to Build a Koi Pond

What Are Koi Ponds?

Koi Ponds are ponds that are constructed with the intention of housing koi fish. They are designed for the sole purpose of raising and keeping koi. This is what separates a koi pond from other fish ponds. Koi ponds are built to be very functional and also to bring out the aesthetic and cathartic atmosphere that only a koi pond can provide. A Koi pond is a pond which has been designed and built specifically to keep these colorful carp.

They are usually designed in a way that gives the pond a harmonious feel to maximize the health of the fish to help them reach their full size and best color. Koi ponds are known for being serene and tranquil. They are a therapeutic and aesthetic addition to any household. With the right set up and maintenance you will definitely enjoy the fruits of your investments.

Professional Koi Pond Installation vs Building One Myself

Koi Pond installation is a matter that should be approached with a great deal of care and attention. When you take the proper steps to install a perfectly functioning koi pond, you will undoubtedly reap the benefits of your investment. However, it is important to remember that building a koi pond requires a great deal of commitment.

The question right now is how much commitment is required? Should you attempt to build the koi pond yourself or is it more advisable to seek professional assistance?

Building a koi pond will require you to:

  • Draw up plans
  • Select equipment
  • Commit to acts of labor

Hiring a professional will probably be easier, but even that will take several days before it is complete; but then again, doing it on your own will probably take several weeks, maybe even months.

So this is something you have to think about carefully. What type of koi pond do you want? How much time do you have to spare? Are you cut out for labor?

Benefits Of Hiring A Professional

  • A good contractor that can complete the job in only a few days
  • A reliable contractor has the experience to do a top-quality job
  • It will save you a whole lot of time that you would have spent working on the pond.
  • It is a solid investment and doesn’t carry the financial risk you will face if you attempt to do it yourself
  • We at Oklahoma Ponds can assure you that if you hire our services, we will deliver the best quality work available anywhere. Your Koi pond will be perfectly functional and beautiful to an almost ethereal degree.

Benefits Of Building It Yourself

  • If you are a handy person that is capable of building a koi pond, you will be saving yourself a whole lot of money
  • You will be sending your time constructively
  • You will be doing a lot of exercise so it is very healthy
  • You will enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that will come with completing the project.

How Deep Should a Koi Pond Be?

A good koi pond has to be 3 feet deep, at least. There should be no areas in the pond that are shallower than 2 feet. If you have any shallow areas in your pond, your precious Koi fish will be vulnerable to predators such as the Blue Heron and Raccoons.

You might think you don’t have any predators in your neighborhood but the presence of a fish pond will certainly attract predators.

Blue Herons will stand in your pond for hours until they are done with your fish, so the best defense is to make sure they can’t do that. Build a deep pond.

It is also important to make sure that all the sides go straight down, they should not be tapered. Aquascape type ponds where the sides of the pond gently taper in toward the bottom are not suitable for koi fish. You should also build a cave in the pond where the fish can hide in when threatened by the presence of a predator.

You don’t want to have to cover your pond to protect the fish; that will absolutely destroy the aesthetic of your pond and reduce its therapeutic and serene quality. The best way to protect your Koi fish from predators is to build a deep pond with steep sides.

There is also the case of growing jumbo Koi. Koi get their exercise by swimming up and down so the pond should be at least 6 feet deep.

How to Maintain a Koi Pond

Koi ponds will always be a beautiful addition to any home. They are gorgeous and serene and add a special kind of life to your outdoor space. However, like all beautiful things, Koi ponds need to be maintained in order for them to retain their beauty and for the fish to grow more beautiful and healthy.

Regular koi fish maintenance will help you keep your fish and the pond itself looking wonderful, but what steps do you need to take to properly maintain your Koi pond?

How to maintain a koi pond

Feeding Your Koi

Feeding your koi fish
Make sure you do not feed your Koi fish more than once a day. If you overfeed your fish there will be lots of food remnant in the pond and they will decay in the water. This will have the effect of clouding the water, spurring bacterial growth and making your beautiful Koi fish sick. Your pond will also begin to stink and that is the last thing you want for your Koi pond.

Watch So That Your Koi Pond Doesn’t Become Overcrowded

Pay attention to the fish and plant life in your pond. Make sure the pond doesn’t become overpopulated. There shouldn’t be too many plants covering the surface of the pond. The aim is to achieve a ratio of 40 to 50 percent plants to water. Plants are good for the pond, but too many will make the environment unhealthy because the presence of too many plants will affect the pond’s oxygen levels and prevent sunlight from getting to the water. Plus they will obscure your view of your beautiful Koi fish.

Keep the Pond Clean

Your pond has to be clean 100% of the time. Don’t let debris stay in the water for too long or they will start to decay and eventually ruin the water.

Koi Pond Skimmer: What is it and How Does it Work?

How Koi Pond Skimmers Work

The importance of pond skimmers cannot be exaggerated because without them leaves, twigs, pollen, dirt and other debris can accumulate in your expertly designed koi pond until they decompose and leave the pond a potential mess. This significantly ups the chances of algae growth in your pond, which can suffocate plants and endanger pond life. The decomposing debris can also pass out toxins that make the water murky and, on the not so long run, inhabitable. You can go the old fashioned way by manually netting out the debris, but a pond skimmer is a much easier way to remove floating debris.

Koi Pond Skimmer

What Is A Koi Pond Skimmer?

Koi ponds are meant to be peaceful and a place of enjoyment, but organic build up can really get in the way of that. The koi pond and water feature industry has come a long way in the last decade and we now have the luxury to create beautiful and low maintenance ponds. This all starts with the pond skimmer. That brings us to the question, what is a koi pond skimmer? A koi pond skimmer is an integral piece of a pond or water gardens filtration. This helps keep the feature clean and also serves as the first line of defense in keeping leaves, twigs, and other debris from settling on the bottom by catching the debris in an easy to empty debris basket. Cleaning the skimmer also just happens to be an easy task! Here at Oklahoma Ponds we make the provision of your essential aquatic items our top goal. You can contact us today for all of your pond construction and cleaning needs.

What Pond Skimmers Do For Your Koi Pond

Now that we’ve explained what exactly a pond skimmer does, it’s time to let you know why it’s super essential that you have one. Skimmers have been around for a while; some have awesome pros while the rest have a sad amount of cons. However, at Oklahoma Ponds, we install all of our ponds using the Aquascape brand, these skimmers are used widely in some of the most beautiful water features in the world. Let’s show you a few things that the pond skimmer can do for your pond.

While debris could be largely harmless when found in tiny quantities, it could become a full-blown menace when not nipped in the bud. That’s the awesome thing about the pond skimmer! With it, you can wave your debris problems away for good. At Oklahoma Ponds, we install top notch skimmers that grab larger debris and then a skimmer filter pad grabs finer particles before the water reaches the pump. That way your pond will be tidy, hygienic, and free from the clogs that affect other aquatic facility owners.

Pond cleaning tools weren’t invented just yesterday; they’ve been around for for decades, however most of them went out of preference due to the difficulty in access. Well, the pond skimmer is the complete opposite as it’s installation is just at the edge of the pond. This makes for easy access to your pump should something go wrong. There is zero need to step in the pond to check your pump or pull it from the feature for the winter.

One of the most underrated features of this component is the ability to return clean water without necessarily frustrating the entire process. Thanks to the pond skimmer, your pond can now have protect water flow to your pump. Think about all the stress you go through doing this manually!

Okay, this might sound a bit heady but proper ponds need to be aerated, this is essential to keep the plants alive and the inhabitants of the pond healthy. The skimmer performs this role quite admirably indeed. The pump in the skimmer constantly moves the water by pulling it in, even if you can’t see a strong current. This gentle movement generated is enough to keep the surface of the water changing constantly, and it helps the water on the surface absorb oxygen releasing it as it is pumped into the bottom of the component. The importance of aerating cannot be understated and is super is important to keep the facility from becoming stagnant.

There’s a saying that goes, prevention is better than cure. We didn’t pay attention to that saying until we saw it first hand in our years of experience. But thanks to the high-grade skimmer on show, the days of debris nightmares are long gone as your skimmer is constantly pulling water into it, it’s also skimming any debris that has fallen into your pond. That way the debris is nipped in the bud before it even accumulates and becomes a menace.

Do I Need Koi Pond Skimmer?

Pondless Waterfall maintanence

Well, the ball is in your court and there’s no way that we’d tell you otherwise. However, it’s a really smart option to ditch the complex and go for a simple and easy to use option that is even more effective. A skimmer gives you so much for so little and makes you forget the arduous pond cleaning days in no time.

If your pond pump is getting constantly clogged , then you probably need it. Skimmers are designed to eliminate water quality problems and reduce maintenance by removing debris before it sinks to the bottom of the pond, allowing a pond to be installed anywhere, even beneath trees. If you’re looking for quick and professional installation, then Oklahoma Ponds is your team!

1. Stable supply and Demand

Fish is one of the highest sources of protein, and is consumed on a very large scale. This means that demand for fish is stable throughout the year and since fishes grow rapidly, there will always be enough to supply

2. Top consumer choice

Fish is usually much cheaper than most meat products and as a result, it sells much faster. This makes it very appealing to consumers making it the top choice for consumers in terms of affordability.

3. Steady Growth pattern

The growth pattern in fish is very fast and easy to understand. Farmers can also quicken the growth process of the fishes by giving them certain growth-enhancing feeds. Farmers can organize their fish pond around the fishes’ growth pattern so that they can harvest and sell all year round.

4. High Revenue

With proper planning and good management, fish farming can be very profitable for farmers.

5. No Environmental Hazard

Commercial fish ponds can be set up anywhere, even in residential areas, because it does not pose any risk to the environment.

6. Easy Addition to General farm activities

Farmers can easily adopt fish farming into their already existing crop farms and create more profit while conserving water and other resources.

7. Any species of fish can be reared

You are free to grow any species of fish you choose to!

8. Ease of Access

The fish ponds can be placed or even constructed within your compound to increase accessibility and cut off of transportation costs.

9. Easy to maintain

With adequate knowledge, expertise, and resources, fishes can be very easy to handle and maintain.

How We Construct Commercial Fish Ponds

The assurance of a regular and good source of water supply and land that can retain water (in the case of earthen ponds) for fish culture is the impetus that farmers need in planning how large the pond should be and how many of a particular unit or units should be constructed. Having done the survey of the land, it is easy to plan the layout of the ponds and channels on paper.

Ongoing Commercial Pond Maintenance

An ideal water condition is necessary for the survival and growth of healthy fish. This is because the entire life of the fish is completely dependent on the quality of its environment. The pond bottom has an important role to play on the water quality of the medium because the fertility of the pond is directly related to the size of fish at harvest. It is for this that fishponds must be limed and fertilized prior to stocking with fish fingerlings or juveniles.

Pond Liner: Your Complete Liner Repair Guide

Complete Pond Liner Repair Guide

Pond liners are a must have for all fish pond owners. They are a plastic liner that ensures that  the water in your pond prevents leaks, and you can maintain a healthy atmosphere. From a technical stand point, a pond liner is an impermeable geomembrane used to retain liquids. Sometimes however you may need to repair this useful tool. This guide will help you, but you can call us 24/7 for liner repairs or ongoing outdoor pond maintenance in Oklahoma. Pond liners are used for things like the:

pond liner

Common Ways That Pond Liners Tear

Ponds will always lose some water due to uncontrollable factors like evaporation, splashing from water features and waterfalls. But if the water starts disappearing rapidly or at a faster rate than it normally does then you will need to fix the issue or reach out to a team of professionals like Oklahoma Ponds for guidance. When you notice this happening, you have to figure out whether or not you have a leak. Below are some common ways that pond liners tear:

UV Light:

Quality pond liners usually have a warranty against damage from UV light and should at least last up to twenty years. However, there are cases when the pond liner in question is thin and low quality. In these cases the pond liner can be damaged by UV light.

External Sources:

External sources are the main source of damage to the liner. These are things like, people walking inside the pond, sharp objects puncturing the liner, or roots growing up through the base of the pond. You can prevent roots from damaging your liner by laying pond underlay on the ground before laying the liner down. People often lay weed mat first, beneath the underlay which is a cheap way to get another protective layer before the liner. Weed mats help to guide roots away from the liner.

How to Repair a Pond Liner

Once you suspect that you might have a tear in your liner, follow these steps to find it.

  1. Turn off your pond pump and monitor the water level for roughly 24-48 hours. If the water level continues to drop, then the leak is located in the main basin of the pond and not outside of the pond in a water feature or piping.
Commercial pond construction
  1. If the tear is located outside the pond, then you should check your plumbing joins and pipes for leaks. You should also check the waterfall and stream. In such a case the leak is usually a result of plant latter or other obstructions that raise the water level above the liner, or stones settling and moving the liner. Check for wet spots outside the pond in these areas.

3. If the leak turns out to be in the main basin, let the pond empty to the point where the level of the pond stays steady. This will help you figure out the approximate level of the leak. In the case where the water level gets low enough to harm the fish and plants, then the fish and plants should be removed and placed in a free standing pond temporarily.

Repairing the Pond Liner

There are numerous methods for repairing a pond liner. The method you choose depends on your budget and time frame.

For a quick and affordable fix, you can use a sealant to fix the hole underwater, a sealant that is safe for fish and plants. For more difficult or larger tears, please contact us for assistance.

  1. Place the silicon in a caulking gun, and squeeze it into and around the hole in the pond liner.
  2. Smear the silicon over and around the hole.
  3. For a larger hole, cut a small piece of the pond liner from the edge of the pond and place that over the silicon to patch the hole. Ensure both pond liner surfaces are cleaned well first. The pond can be re-filled when you are satisfied with your repair work.

How to Prevent Pond Liners from Tearing

The key to preventing your pond liner from tearing is to make sure you buy the right pond liner and to install it right. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid when buying and installing your liner:

  • Putting too much emphasis on price: Pond lines tend to last for a really long time. As long as you choose one that is tough enough to resist puncturing and damage by exposure to sunlight and that is strong enough to line a pond for many years. It isn’t a bad idea for you to spend a decent amount of money for a product that lasts for minimum 20 years. The best choice for a garden pond would be a 0.75mm thick EPDM (Epalyn) liner.
  • Ordering the wrong size pond liner: Measure the hole for the pond accurately in three directions – the length, breadth and depth. Then go online to put these figures into a pond liner size calculator to get the exact dimensions.
  • Not adding a protective underlay to your order: Your pond liner needs to be protected from above and below. Without protecting your pond, you’ll be exposing it to possible damage. So, you have to line your pond with a geotextile protective underlay before installing it.
  • Failure to secure the edges of the liner: When you install the liner, make sure to adequately overlap the edges to make sure your feature is water tight. Then secure the overlap in place with your choice of edging material.

Types of Koi Fish: A ‘School’ of Variety

Types of Koi Fish Varieties

The Japanese Koi are arguably the most popular and widely kept fish on the globe. Koi fish are also known as Nishikigoi or jinli, which translates to ‘brocaded carp.’ They are very colorful fish which is why they can usually be seen in aquariums and the koi ponds we install for our customers.

The Japanese have identified numerous varieties of koi fish. These distinguish the varieties of koi fish based on their coloration, scales, and patterns. Koi fish are commonly found in white, red, black, blue, yellow, and cream colors.

Over 100 types of koi fish have been identified but only about 13 are popular all over the world. The most popular types of koi fish are:

commercial pond construction

Kohaku is the first variety of koi fish that developed with two colors. This fish’s majestic beauty makes it the most popular choice for koi pond. The Kohaku koi fish has a white colored body witch beautiful red blotches that give it its gorgeous look and recognizable aesthetic. Also, Kohaku fish usually have a yellow nose.

Kohaku have markings on their bodies that make them stand out. Most Kohaku have a red-colored mark on their head that is very distinguishable from the markings on the rest of their body.

Taisho Sanke is also known as the Taisho Sanshoku or simply Sanke. Sanshoku means three colors. The Taisho has three colors on its body which are white, red, and black. It looks just like the Kohaku koi, except it has black markings.

Showa is also known as Showa Sanshoku or Showa Sanke. As mentioned earlier, sanshoku means three colors. Showa gets its name due to the presence of white, red, and black colors on its body.

Showa is quite similar to Sanke. However, the main difference that sets the two types of koi fish apart is the Karasu (black-colored body) of the Showa. Showa has white and red-colored markings over a mostly black-colored body or base.

The Tancho koi fish is named after the national bird of Japan, the Tancho Crane, which has a prominent red spot on its head. Tancho is simple and sleek and is known for the trademark pigmentation (a red spot) on its head.

Tancho Kohaku is the most unusually beautiful Tancho. It is snow-white in color and has a red-colored spot on its head. This spot is usually round in shape, but it can be found in other symmetrical shapes as well. To fall under the Tancho umbrella, the spot on the head should be symmetrical, regardless of its shape.

Utsuri is not just a single type of koi fish. It is the name of a category, Utsurimono, that includes three types of Utsuri koi fish; Shiro Utsuri, Ki Utsuri, and Hi Utsuri. The koi fish that fall under in the Utsuri category have a black-colored body with red, white, or yellow markings.

How to Take Care of Koi Fish

There is no end to the benefits of having a Koi fish pond at your home. The aesthetically pleasing koi have a calming and anxiety relieving effect on people and few things come as close to paradise as a koi pond.

But like all beautiful things in life, koi fish, it takes a little knowledge to care for koi fish and to keep them healthy and beautiful. The key to taking care of koi fish is the pond. A healthy koi pond means healthy koi fish.

Listed below are the most important keys for caring for koi fish.

Perform constant water checks to avoid common problems

Koi pond owners will likely deal with issues like acid rain, excessive fish waste and nutrient-enriched runoff. You have to perform regular water checks to keep these issues from turning into serious problems for your koi.

Maintain the right temperature

Although it’s uncommon in Oklahoma, when ice does form on the pond’s surface, the koi fish will quietly go to the bottom of the pond. If the forecast expects freezing temperatures for several days then you will want to use a floating de-icer to maintain the hole in the ice for proper gas exchange.

Avoid overfeeding

Over feeding your Koi is one of the most common yet unhealthiest mistakes made by well-intentioned koi owners. Overfeeding can lead to poor water quality which itself can initiate a host of  additional problems down the road.  These problems include high ammonia and nitrites in the water which can translate into fin rot, parasites and other diseases.

How Much Do Koi Fish Cost?

Some breeders will pay up to $20,000 for a highly prized adult koi. Younger koi around four inches can sell for $10 or less for for the hobbyist koi owner.

But pricing varies everywhere. Where you purchase your koi fish, the variety of koi fish, the size of the fish, and the lineage can all affect pricing.

Pondless Waterfall Installation

Now that you’ve taken out hours or possibly days from your busy schedule to create the perfect pondless waterfall, it is only natural that you take out time to maintain it such that it’ll have a proper lifespan. You can do this in a variety of ways such as:

  • Cleaning up Algae

Largely harmless in the grand scheme of things but super ugly thanks to the way it gathers up in the most vintage of spots. Algae has the unique yet notorious talent of making facilities look unkempt and unattractive. They form based on having a steady supply of moisture, sunlight and organic material. Hence, the best way to combat it is to cut off the algae’s supply route. This can be done by regularly cleaning and removing the algae from your treasured rocks.

  • Tidying the Debris

Debris isn’t a new thing when talking about aquatic components, as such it’s not such a bad thing. Pondless waterfalls typically contain various sizes of rocks, which form crevices that trap debris, such as leaves and twigs. To aid your waterfall’s beauty ensure you make out time to rid the surroundings of the debris and cut off the supply route as soon as possible. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

  • Curb the Evaporation

The scariest part of having this facility is the possible evaporation of your hard work. While pondless waterfalls use significantly less water than a waterfall installed in a pond, due to the constant recycling of water, this water will eventually evaporate and you will need to refill the reservoir. Ensure that you have proper connections and a fantastic reservoir to regularly tend to your waterfall. I mean, what’s the beauty of such a facility without the water?

Costs of a Pondless Waterfall Installation

As it is with almost every  project worth undertaking, pricing a pondless waterfall isn’t exactly a piece of cake. You have to consider a plethora of factors such as material cost, site access and other unforeseen circumstances too. The combination of all of this might shoot up your budget or take it significantly down. All things considered, we are positive that our pricing at Oklahoma Ponds will pleasantly surprise you. We offer fair pricing and with over 30 years of experience, you can trust in us to build you a beautiful fountain that will last the test of time

Koi Pond in the Winter: Why Maintenance is Important

The cold winter months aren’t often associated with a thriving pond. You might think you have months to go until your pond needs your attention. But winter is the best time to schedule your pond’s cleaning and maintenance. The cold temperatures create ideal conditions for koi pond maintenance in winter. Cleaning out your pond now will help your pond prosper come spring and summer.

Does Your Pond Need Annual Maintenance?

Your pond is a delicate ecosystem that requires regular attention to thrive. We recommend an annual cleanout and maintenance every year. Not only does this maintenance clean out any debris that may have fallen into your pond during the harsh winter months, but it also protects the health of both the fish and the plants in your pond.

Springtime maintenance is also crucial to keep beneficial bacteria healthy while protecting against harmful bacteria. Keeping these bacteria at the right levels will leave your pond’s water clear and protect the health of your fish.

Why Winter is a Great Time for Pond Maintenance

While you’ll often hear about “springtime pond maintenance,” the winter months are actually a great time to schedule this service, particularly here in Oklahoma.

There are four fundamentals that keep your pond’s ecosystem healthy: filtration, bacteria, plants and fish, and additives. Each of these must be functioning correctly for your pond to thrive.

Annual maintenance is crucial to keep all four components working together successfully. While you might be tempted to wait until the weather warms up to schedule your pond cleanout, we encourage our customers to contact us well before spring hits. January, February, and March are ideal times to schedule a cleanout for several reasons.

Cold Weather is Safe for Fish

Your pond is more than just a decorative feature of your home or business. It’s also a living ecosystem that needs regular attention to flourish. Your fish, plants, and other features also represent a significant investment. Therefore, we work hard to keep every component of your pond healthy.

During the winter months, fish are much less active. The cold weather makes them sluggish. Because of this, your fish will experience less stress during a winter cleanout. During a cleanout, we remove your fish and place them in a holding tank. This process can cause undue stress during warmer weather, when the fish are more active. That’s why we encourage our customers to schedule cleanouts during winter: it’s less traumatic for your fish.

Winter Pond Maintenance Protects Beneficial Bacteria

Beneficial bacteria are a crucial part of a healthy pond ecosystem. These bacteria help improve water quality and increase the health of both fish and plant life.

During the winter months, these beneficial bacteria are dormant. When we do a winter cleanout, we can clean your pond without disrupting the beneficial bacteria. If we wait for warmer weather, those bacteria begin to colonize, and a cleanout can cause harm.

Get Your Pond Maintenance Scheduled and Out of the Way

Besides protecting the health of both fish and beneficial bacteria, scheduling your annual cleanout now means you’ll have one less thing to worry about when spring arrives.

Our schedule often fills up quickly as the weather heats up. But customers who schedule maintenance in January, February, and even March won’t have to wait for an appointment.

Plus, once the first blooms of spring start to show, your pond will already be clean, healthy, and ready for you to enjoy all season long.
